I am angry, really angry today and the DH had to bear the brunt of it, for no good reason. The reason, a new head of operations for the Middle East in his organisation, unfortunately an Indian. Just a month into his job and he is already making my life miserable. There is a good reason why I am wary of any Indian in a senior management position. They take employees for granted, and have absolutely zero sensitivity and consideration for them and their lives. Office politics is a part of every office I believe, some more and some less, but the basic attitude of an Indian worker really scares me.
The two day weekend, which has been the way the past 10 years in the organisation is likely to soon be slashed to a single day weekend, nine hour work days have been extended to ten and a lot of benefits have been cancelled. Why do they work this way, why do they want to suck the life out of their employees, leaving them nothing but stress and misery. I have had the same experience, when I was working an Indian team replaced the existing top management which consisted of Europeans. Bonuses were slashed, the offshore allowances were halved, stationary was rationed and even tea and coffee in the office got rationed. The motto being, if I can get the same work at half the cost, why not? They believe in pushing the employee to their limits, to get the most for the least. I wonder if management education introduces them to the concept of satisfied employees being a lot more productive and loyal!
The average Indian worker on the other hand thinks its sacrilege to even think of a personal life at work! Come on people you work to earn and earn to live! No play and all work makes Jack a dull boy. I remember the initiation program we had in my company, it was a three month intensive thing , with 80% academic training and 20% behavioral. So in one of the behavioral sessions on team work, we were given a situation where, one of us was to be the team leader, facing a tough spot. They had a deadline to meet the next morning, and one of his female team memember was going through a divorce. The entire team is up, working late in the night, and the woman is not being productive enough, and she takes a break to ... well, sob. The assignment for my friend was to sort the situation. This is what he said , "Come on! Forget all this, we are low on time, come back to your desk and complete your work now. We don't have time for this." You could say fresh out of college, he was naive, and dedicated to work. But unfortunately this is an attitude I saw with most people in office throughout my work life. Stay extra hours, come to office on weekends if you want brownie points. Just doing your work efficiently in the allocated time was never enough! So it is the basic attitude, that an Indian worker can really be juiced, because he/she does not have a personal life, and does not need one either!
I don't blame the average Indian worker fully though, in a dog eat dog world, where at any given point in time, a thousand people are ready take my job for half the pay, I have to stick on, especially where I have no government support system or anything at all to fall back upon. Struggling and being used has become such a part of an average Indian's life, that one even forgets to feel it on most occasions. Sad, very sad but true.
As for the head in the DH's office, I hope he stops sucking up to his bosses, and gets into his senses SOON!

It's all about the balance sheet...Profits will reflect well on the boss...In India too, Indian companies have longer hours and shorter weekends...I actually don't know if the employees do any extra work but they are there...Indians love to be 'seen' working...
yea.. i know what you are talking about. Totally!
you know, its the same situation everywhere... the degree may vary, but the treatment is pretty bad.
We fight this everyday - every single day is a juggle...
Believe me...I know what you are talking about! I had terrible experiences with the two organisations I worked with, which left very bitter tastes in my mouth.
I hope everything works out for your DH.
Hugs!
Hope things getter better GM. {{Hugs}}
I so understand what you`re talking about! Been there, 'seen' that! :(:( I wonder what it is about the Indians and work! Infact I have been meaning to do a post on Indian work ethics for some time now. From personal experience I know them to be slave drivers. And to top that, god forbid if you ever need the bosses to do you a favour(like write a letter of reference!), you`ll see their true colours! I wonder if you`ve noticed another thing - the email response rate. I expect people to be a bit more professional while responding to employees. No one would email the boss to chit-chat really! It has to be important, esp when you`re saying so in the email!!(I`m talking of my ex boss in Kolkata). I wonder where all the work ethics go, when its time for the bosses to show some.
Bones - Don't even remind me of the show of working. God whatever happened to efficiency? Doesn't that count? Only extra hours, and last minute rush to meet the deadline is all that seems to count.I think the bosses lack brains.
Pixie - And that even affects our productivity!
M4 - Its no better anywhere else! I think it will continue the way it is, the day of unions are protests over. :(
Solilo - Thanks. :)
Piper - Oh! Man recommendations, they will screw you bad, if you have ever been the non follower types. Really work culture needs a big shift in India and in Indians!
Hi, came to your blog from themadmomma. I so agree that we go thru the nonsense of 'seen working' for 'half the cost' all the time - sigh... My way of silent protest is not to attend team meetings called by such heads/managers. It does have somewhat bad repercussions but I have stopped caring!
Great blog :).
Hi,
The issue of reduced amenities/perks/facilities at workplace in the current scenario is universal phenomenon. So I think even the Europeans would have resorted to it in the current circumstances.
The reason why Indian companies have hectic work hours is to do with the fact that by and large most of our industry works on the plank of labor cost arbitrage and not technology and capital which can precipitate better efficiency and a steeper learning curve.
One more reason we Indians are servile is a reflection of our existing social fabric outside of workplace where power/authority is highly related to one's self esteem and position in the society. This is illustrated by the fact that a team in India( told to me by my friends in the industry) will invariably set a stiff deadline to impress the boss and to achieve improvement over time wil lead to more time in the office. So it is not just the management per se who are to be held accountable in this scenario.
In addition to this our place in the society is invariably linked with the money in our bank accounts. So greater social ranking in India(disregard inheritance) is a function of greater time spent working. In the Indian society, whether its desirable or not, keeping up/surpassing with the Jones's is the norm.
What I would like to convey with this is the attitude in the workplace cannot be blamed onto a select few. It is just a relection of our society.
In regards to being considerate to others problems at workplace it is a quagmire which can never be handled to everyone's satisfaction. It is well nigh impossible to objectively rate problems and cut them a slack. The word used by us to describle ourselves-professional implies that one should be able to deal with personal issues without hindering your work.
SK
PS: A thoughtful and well articluate blog which brings about good issues to reflect about. Keep up your good work.
YS - Welcome! Indeed it is, they will milk every drop out of us, till we are completely withered, we take it because the society does not provide a decent support system. A colleague will happily stab you to get ahead, instead of joining hands and standing together for something that will benefit everyone. Sad! Good protest act there.
SK - I completely understand the changes made due to recession, what I am talking about are such attitudes in boom times. I agree with the social ranking structure leading to such attitudes at workplace to a certain extent, but I don't think disrespecting our own selves and working like slaves will get us anywhere much. this is the reason the country has only economic development, while it lies in the same state of social backwardness.I agree it is not just a few, but practically every Indian worker who works this way, some because they want to get ahead, and others because they have no choice, but to earn and feed their family.
Thanks. :)
